Songs for Sabotage is a Swedish-American pop band featuring Lina Sophie as the lead singer and guitarist and Richey Rose responsible for the bass and production. The duo have recently released their single self-produced music, called “Fire”.

The video begins with Lina Sophie as she walks down an alley. It is this introductory walk of Sophie that slowly prepares both the listeners and the viewers, to get introduced by the shadowy and cinematic gem. This is further enhanced by the infectious hook and guitar riffs for the first 30 seconds paired with the hypnotic vocals of Sophie.

As far as the lyrics are concerned, I feel it has been intentionally kept open for interpretation. It can be about a passionate love affair between two souls or about yearning and despair expressed by one soul. I also feel that the experimentation with the shadow in the video was also intentional to keep in sync with the theme of the music. This will be applicable only if the actual theme that the artists had already in mind actually matches with the hypothetical assumption that I have just presented before you. Though Sophie’s face is still visible to the viewers in the video, Rose’s face has been largely kept under the dark cast of the shadow.

While the theme of the song has been kept open for interpretation, the subtle urgency raised by Sophie’s charisma over Rose’s bewitching bassline, especially on the chorus: “I’d set myself on fire for you/ There’s not a single thing that that you can do to convince me that I shouldn’t walk away”. This again there is this line that has struck me

“Ride with me through the night Next to the driver’s side Laid back in leather High on blood and gasoline D’ you know what I mean? We’re gonna live forever”

The tune of the song has also been apparently kept slow and mysterious that reminds me of “Hotel California”. This is my personal opinion, which will vary from other listeners.

There is no doubt about the immense effort and planning that has been put into the video production just like the music production. The credit for this ofcourse goes to the Director of Photography – Nick Bean and the rest of the team members.

“Fire” is just one of the seven dark songs of the duo’s debut album “Deep Fake” that will be released shortly this year. It is already out on many popular music platforms namely:

About the Songs For Sabotage Duo

Songs for Sabotage’s story began in late 2018. The two musicians met at Brooklyn bar, Night of Joy, on an evening when Rose was the DJ. A few months later, they started writing and recording music in Rose’s home studio in downtown Manhattan. The band was largely born out of Sophie and Rose’s mutual love for Swedish pop, ‘80s new wave, and ‘00s electro. “We want to offer more in regards to memorable songwriting, especially when it comes to a clever, classic pop hook,” explains Rose. The duo began collaborating around the same time their respective previous bands were breaking up. “One day we were at [NYC bookstore] the Strand and saw this book of artwork titled Songs for Sabotage – we found it both an appropriate and humorous title for our then pet project.” says Sophie. Though it’s barely been a year since they’ve joined forces, SFS have already played an impressive list of New York venues including The Sultan Room, Mercury Lounge, Berlin and Home Sweet Home.
